Many Catholic-sponsored health systems are making a
strong investment in well-structured, intensive leadership formation efforts.
Noting this trend, CHA began an initiative in 2009 to learn why this is being
done and what the benefit or return on investment is. The Framework for Senior
Leadership Formation is the result of this work. This 30-page document, released
in October of 2011, identifies leading practices of leadership formation
programs developed across Catholic health care ministry to build collective
understanding around what is being done to assure the presence of lay persons
who will offer integral ministry leadership for Catholic health care, if current
efforts are enough to achieve a “critical mass” of well-formed leaders, and how
to define the success or failure of these efforts. This framework, while not
prescriptive, provides insight, practices and potential next steps to help all
Catholic health ministries in their formation and development activities.
