Over the past five years, there has been growing medical skepticism among Americans. In part, this was fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic and differing opinions on potential causes, various treatments, and mandated vaccines. Recent federal policy decisions and announcements related to pediatric vaccines, autism, and acetaminophen use have further inflamed debate across the country, exacerbating a loss of social trust in medicine. In light of the challenges brought about by medical skepticism, how might the principles of Catholic social teaching offer an alternative narrative to support public health and bolster social trust? This presentation addresses this question by demonstrating how the principles of the common good, preferential option for the poor and solidarity offer a counter-narrative to differing claims about the efficacy of public health policies.
